Quick answer. The U.P. Education Services Selection Commission has advertised 13 Assistant Professor posts in Statistics, subject code 77, under Advertisement 04/2026. Applications opened on 8 September 2026 and the fee payment deadline is 7 October 2026, with a correction window closing 11 October. The written examination is on 19 and 20 November 2026. Eligibility requires a Master’s degree with 55 percent plus NET, SLET, SET or a qualifying PhD. The written paper carries 360 marks across 120 questions in 2 hours, with negative marking, and the interview carries 40 marks.
The commission was formerly known as UPHESC, the U.P. Higher Education Services Commission. The official Statistics syllabus PDF still carries that older name. It is the same body.
Twenty nine days remain to apply.
The Dates
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Advertisement published | 8 September 2026 |
| Application opens | 8 September 2026 |
| Last date for fee payment | 7 October 2026 |
| Last date for correction | 11 October 2026 |
| Written examination | 19 and 20 November 2026 |
Two separate deadlines, and people confuse them. 7 October is the real one. The correction window that follows is short and does not cover every field.
The Vacancies
Statistics appears at serial 37 of the vacancy table with 13 posts, all in co-educational colleges.
| Category | Posts |
|---|---|
| General | 6 |
| SC | 1 |
| ST | 0 |
| OBC | 5 |
| EWS | 1 |
| Total | 13 |
None of the 13 are in women’s colleges. Two carry horizontal reservation for women, applied across the categories above rather than added to them.
The total across all 42 subjects is 1,936 posts. The commission notes that the number of vacancies may increase or decrease.
Two more posts most candidates will miss
Serial 42 lists Agricultural Statistics with 2 posts, both OBC.
The commission’s inter-related subject table states that for Agricultural Statistics, these qualifications are accepted:
Agricultural Statistics, Statistics, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematical Statistics
So a Statistics postgraduate is eligible for both, which takes the realistic pool from 13 to 15 posts.
The reverse is not true. For the Statistics post itself, the inter-related subject column reads “none”, so only a Statistics degree qualifies there.
Check the Agricultural Statistics syllabus separately before applying, because the two posts are examined differently even though the degree requirement overlaps.
Eligibility, Both Parts Required
The degree
A Master’s degree in Statistics with 55 percent marks from an Indian university, or an equivalent grade on a point scale, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
NET, SLET, SET or PhD
In addition, you must hold one of:
- NET conducted by UGC or CSIR
- SLET or SET, accredited by UGC
- A PhD awarded under UGC regulations 2009 or 2016
There is no route without one of these. If you hold a Master’s in Statistics but no NET, SLET, SET or PhD, you cannot apply for this advertisement. Clearing NET is the step that comes first, and the December cycle is the next opportunity.
The pre 2009 PhD exemption
Candidates registered for a PhD before 11 July 2009 are exempt from NET only if all five conditions are met:
- PhD awarded through regular mode only
- Thesis evaluated by at least two external examiners
- Open oral examination conducted
- At least two research papers published from the PhD work, one of them in a refereed journal
- At least two papers presented at conferences or seminars sponsored by UGC, ICSSR, CSIR or a similar agency
All five must be certified by the university Registrar or the Dean of Academic Affairs.
Foreign PhD route
A PhD in the relevant subject from a foreign university ranked in the world top 500 by QS, Times Higher Education, or the Academic Ranking of World Universities, at any time.
Relaxation in marks
| Who | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC, ST, OBC non creamy layer, PwD categories | 55 percent reduced to 50 percent |
| PhD holders whose Master’s was completed before 19 September 1991 | 5 percent |
Age Limit
Age is reckoned as on 1 July 2026. The maximum is 62 years, which is the superannuation age of the post.
That is far more generous than most competitive examinations. A candidate finishing a PhD in their late thirties or forties is not late for this one.
Age also helps at the tie break. Where two candidates are equal on every other criterion, the older candidate is placed higher.
Fee
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| General, Unreserved, OBC, EWS and others | Rs 2,000 |
| SC and ST | Rs 1,500 |
| Divyangjan | Rs 1,000 |
Online only, through credit card, debit card or net banking. Save the receipt.
How to Apply
The commission uses a One Time Registration system, so OTR must be completed before you can fill the application.
- Complete OTR on upessc.up.gov.in
- Fill the application form, in English
- Upload photograph and signature in the specified formats
- Upload certificates as PDF
- Pay the fee
- Submit, and keep three printed copies
Two of those printed copies are required at the interview stage, along with the supporting documents in two separate sets.
Upload specifications
| Item | Format | Size | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signature | JPG or JPEG, white background | 10 KB to 200 KB | 140 x 110 pixels |
| Photograph | Passport size | 30 KB to 300 KB | 300 to 600 pixels |
| Certificates | 50 KB to 500 KB |
Six Rules That Catch People Out
1. Category, sub category, date of birth and gender cannot be changed after submission. Not in the correction window, not later. Check them twice.
2. Only the High School certificate is accepted for date of birth. No other document is considered, whatever it says.
3. The form must be filled in English, even though the notification is written in Hindi.
4. Multiple applications mean only the last one counts. Every earlier submission is cancelled.
5. Reserved category benefit is only for candidates domiciled in Uttar Pradesh. Candidates from other states are treated as general category.
6. Women candidates must submit a caste certificate issued on the father’s side. A certificate showing category through a husband is not accepted.
The Examination
Selection is out of 400 marks.
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Written examination | 360 |
| Interview | 40 |
The written paper has 120 objective questions in 2 hours: 30 General Knowledge and 90 Statistics. Each question carries 3 marks.
A correct answer earns +3. A wrong answer costs −1. Marking more than one option also costs −1.
That negative marking deserves attention, because every candidate here is NET qualified and UGC NET has no negative marking at all. The habit of attempting everything, which is correct for NET, is expensive here. Three wrong answers cancel one correct answer.
Questions are printed in both Hindi and English.
Syllabus in Brief
Ten units under subject code 77:
| Unit | Title |
|---|---|
| 1 | Probability Theory |
| 2 | Distribution Theory |
| 3 | Statistical Methods |
| 4 | Statistical Quality Control and Time Series |
| 5 | Demography and Index Number |
| 6 | Statistical Inference |
| 7 | Sampling Theory |

Unit 10 is measure theoretic probability and it is the hardest new material for most candidates.
What to Do This Week
- Confirm you hold NET, SLET, SET or a qualifying PhD. Everything else depends on this.
- Check your Master’s percentage against 55, or 50 if a relaxation applies.
- Complete OTR now, not in the first week of October. Portal traffic climbs sharply near the deadline.
- Get your photograph and signature into the exact formats today. Rejected uploads on the last day are a real problem.
- Decide whether you are also applying for Agricultural Statistics.
- Download the syllabus and start with Unit 10, because it is the one with no shortcut.
