Quick answer. GATE 2027 registration closes on 27 September 2026 without a late fee. An extended window runs to 5 October 2026 with an extra Rs 500. Registration is done through the GOAPS portal, and this year registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals. The examination is on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, conducted by IIT Madras.
Twenty days are left. If you have not applied yet, this page is the fastest route from here to a submitted application.
The Dates That Matter Right Now
| Event | Date | Days left |
|---|---|---|
| Regular registration closes | 27 September 2026 | 20 |
| Extended registration closes | 5 October 2026 | 28 |
| Application rectification window | 14 to 21 October 2026 | |
| Examination | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 | |
| Result | 19 March 2027 |
Do not plan around the extended window. It costs Rs 500 more for exactly the same examination, and the portal is at its slowest in those final days. Treat 27 September as your only deadline.

Do This First, Before You Open the Application
Create or verify your DigiLocker account.
This is the change that catches most applicants off guard this year. Registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals applying to GATE 2027. Your name, date of birth, mobile number, email address, photograph, address and verified identity information are pulled directly from DigiLocker during the application.
If your DigiLocker account is not verified, the application stalls halfway through and you cannot finish it.
Verification is not instant. Do it today, not on 26 September, because portal traffic climbs sharply in the final week and support queues get long.
What to Keep Ready
Gather all of this before you start. Filling the form with half your documents missing is how mistakes happen.
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Verified DigiLocker account | Non negotiable this year |
| Photograph | Meeting the specified format and size |
| Signature | Meeting the specified format and size |
| Class 10 certificate | For date of birth |
| Degree certificate or current year marksheet | Whichever applies to you |
| Category certificate | Only if claiming the concessional fee |
| PwD documents | If applicable |
| Online payment method | Net banking, card or UPI |
| Three preferred examination cities | Decide before you open the form |
The Application, Step by Step
- Create an account on the GOAPS portal with a valid email address and mobile number
- Complete DigiLocker verification when prompted
- Enter your personal details and academic qualification
- Select Statistics (ST) as your test paper
- Choose your examination city preferences
- Upload your photograph, signature and category documents
- Complete the live facial detail capture where required
- Pay the application fee online
- Review every single field before submitting
- Submit, then download and save the confirmation page
Step 9 is the one people rush. The rectification window in October covers only some fields, and even then it is a separate process with its own deadline. Two minutes of checking now saves a great deal later.
The Fee
| Category | Regular period | Extended period |
|---|---|---|
| Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates | Rs 1,000 | Rs 1,500 |
| All other candidates | Rs 2,000 | Rs 2,500 |
The fee is charged per paper. If you apply for two papers, you pay for both. It is not refundable once paid.
Should You Add a Second Paper?
GATE 2027 allows one or two papers, subject to the permitted combinations. With Statistics (ST) as your primary paper, the currently permitted second papers are:
| Code | Paper |
|---|---|
| CS | Computer Science and Information Technology |
| DA | Data Science and Artificial Intelligence |
| MA | Mathematics |
| XH | Humanities and Social Sciences |
Two honest points before you decide.
First, the fee doubles. Unlike some other examinations, GATE charges full price for the second paper. A general category candidate pays Rs 4,000 for two papers.
Second, and more important, you have five months. Preparing two papers well in five months is possible only if you already have a strong base in the second subject. Preparing two papers badly gets you two poor scores instead of one good one.
If you are unsure, apply for ST alone. A strong single score opens more doors than two mediocre ones.

Five Mistakes That Cost People Their Application
1. Leaving DigiLocker to the last week. Verification takes time and the queue grows. This is the single most likely reason an application fails to complete this year.
2. Mismatched name spelling. The name on your DigiLocker, your certificates and your photo ID must match. A middle name present in one and missing in another creates problems at the examination centre, not at the application stage, which is worse because you find out too late.
3. Wrong paper code. Statistics is ST. Do not confuse it with any other code in the dropdown. Read it twice before moving to the next screen.
4. Photograph and signature in the wrong format. Read the exact specification in the Information Brochure before you scan anything. Rejected uploads on the last day are a real problem.
5. Not saving the confirmation page. Download it, and keep a copy somewhere other than your phone.
Eligibility, in One Table
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Age limit | None |
| Number of attempts | No restriction |
| Academic | Currently in the third year or higher of an eligible undergraduate programme, or holding an eligible degree |
| Score validity | 3 years |
One distinction worth understanding now rather than in March. Examination eligibility is not the same as admission eligibility. You may be fully eligible to write GATE and still not meet the requirements of a specific postgraduate programme, because individual IITs, IISc and other institutions set their own conditions. Read the admission notification of your target institute separately.
If You Miss 27 September
You have until 5 October 2026 with a late fee of Rs 500. Beyond that, there is no further extension and the next opportunity is GATE 2028.
Once You Have Applied
The application takes an afternoon. The paper takes five months. Three things matter more than anything else from here:
- Download the official ST syllabus and use it as your only checklist. The syllabus has been revised for 2027 and is now presented in 12 sections instead of 10.
official ST syllabus, now in 12 sections | what actually changed in the 2027 syllabus - Understand the question formats. MCQ carries negative marking, MSQ and NAT do not, and MSQ has no partial marking either. Each needs a different approach.
how MCQ, MSQ and NAT are marked - Start previous year questions early, topic by topic, not saved for January. Only eight ST papers exist, since the paper was introduced in 2019. Use every one.
