UGC NET Statistics Exam Day Guide: Documents, Rules and Last Minute Strategy

Published 9 September 2026 · 8 min read · By Shyam Agrawal

Quick answer. Carry a printed admit card, one original photo identity proof and a passport size photograph matching your application. Reach the centre at least 90 minutes before gate closing, because gates shut 30 minutes before the session begins and latecomers are not admitted. Phones, smartwatches, calculators and all printed material are banned. Inside, you have 180 minutes for 150 questions across Paper 1 and Paper 2 with no break. There is no negative marking, so leave nothing blank.

You have studied for months. Now one thing stands between you and a strong result, and it is not more revision. It is a calm, well managed exam day.

This guide covers everything before, during and after the paper. It applies to every UGC NET Statistics cycle. Your admit card is always the final authority on your date, shift and centre.

Shift timings and your exact date are printed on your admit card. General schedules published online are not a substitute for it.

Download and Check Your Admit Card

Admit cards are released a few days before the examination on the official NTA website. They are never sent by post or email. Online download is the only route.

Log in with your application number and date of birth or password, download the file, and take two or three clear printouts on A4 paper.

Then check every line:

  • Your name, spelled exactly as on your identity document
  • Your photograph and signature
  • Subject and subject code, which should read Statistics 107
  • Examination date
  • Reporting time and gate closing time, which are different
  • The full centre address

If anything is wrong, contact the NTA help desk immediately and get it corrected well before the day. Do not leave it.

Documents to Carry

Missing any of these can stop you at the gate.

ItemNotes
Printed admit cardA copy on your phone is usually not accepted
Original photo IDAadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, Passport or Driving Licence
Passport size photographThe same one you uploaded in your application
Disability certificatesOnly if you have requested a scribe or compensatory time

Put all of it in a clear folder the night before and keep it by the door. Not in the morning.

What You Cannot Carry Inside

Centres run a frisking process with metal detectors. Leave these at home or with someone outside.

  • Mobile phones, smartwatches and any electronic device
  • Calculators of any kind. The paper is designed to be solved without one
  • Books, notes, loose paper or any printed material other than the admit card
  • Bags, wallets and pouches
  • Food and drinks

Water rules vary by centre and some permit a transparent bottle. Follow the exact instructions printed on your own admit card rather than what someone tells you online.

Reporting Time and Entry

Reach early. This is the single easiest way to remove stress from the day.

Gates close 30 minutes before the session starts, and latecomers are not admitted. There are no exceptions and no appeals.

Reaching “on time” is risky, because security queues take longer than people expect. Aim to arrive at least 90 minutes before gate closing.

Plan the travel the day before. Check the route, the distance and what traffic looks like at that hour on that day of the week. An afternoon shift in a city you do not know is exactly where this goes wrong.

The Night Before

Do not study anything heavy. Your brain needs rest more than it needs one more formula.

Prepare the document folder. Set two alarms. Lay out your clothes. Eat a normal dinner and sleep early.

Light revision is fine, and only of what you already know. Glance at your one page formula sheet or your short notes on standard distributions, properties of estimators and the common tests. Nothing new. A rested mind solves more questions correctly than a tired one that crammed all night.

Inside the Hall: Managing 180 Minutes

This is where strong candidates lose marks, not through weak preparation but through poor time management. 150 questions across two papers in one sitting, and nobody tells you when to switch.

A plan that works for most aspirants:

PhaseTimeWhat you do
Paper 145 to 50 minutes50 questions, most of them direct
Paper 2, first pass90 minutesAnswer everything you are sure of, mark the rest
Paper 2, second pass30 minutesReturn to the marked calculation heavy questions
Final sweep8 to 10 minutesFill every remaining blank

Do not exceed 55 minutes on Paper 1. It carries 100 marks. Paper 2 carries 200 and needs the time more. Paper 1 feels easier, which is exactly why candidates over invest in it.

Move quickly through Reasoning, Mathematical Aptitude and Data Interpretation. Those three units suit Statistics candidates and are the fastest marks on the paper. Do not get stuck inside one comprehension passage.

The rule that decides your score

There is no negative marking. Never leave a question blank.

A wrong answer costs nothing. A blank earns nothing. In your final minutes, put an answer against every unanswered question, even a pure guess. A guess has positive expected value. A blank has exactly zero.

If you have prepared for GATE or IIT JAM before, you have spent months training yourself not to guess. Unlearn it deliberately for this paper.

Paper 2 Strategy for Statistics

Attempt the concept and theory questions first. Probability basics, properties of estimators, types of tests and standard definitions need recall rather than working, so they cost the least time.

Save the longer numerical questions for the second pass. Do not spend three minutes on one heavy calculation while three recall questions sit unanswered.

Read each question fully before answering. UGC NET questions frequently hide a single condition, a “not”, an “always” or a distributional assumption, that changes the answer completely.

You now have a real previous year paper

The June 2026 cycle was the first UGC NET Statistics paper. That means unlike the first batch, you have an actual paper to study, not just a syllabus.

Solve it under timed conditions before your exam. It tells you which units were favoured, how deep the numerical questions went, and how much of the paper was recall against calculation. No amount of general advice replaces that.

Common Mistakes on Exam Day

  1. Reaching “on time” instead of early, then panicking in the security queue
  2. Forgetting the original photo identity document, which blocks entry outright
  3. Carrying a phone or smartwatch out of habit and getting flagged
  4. Spending too long on one difficult question and running out of time
  5. Leaving questions blank in an examination with no negative marking
  6. Studying new topics the night before and losing sleep over them
  7. Over investing in Paper 1 because it feels easier than Paper 2

After the Exam

Walk out calmly whatever the paper felt like. A hard paper is hard for everyone, and the cut off moves with it.

The provisional answer key and your response sheet are released a few days later, with a window to raise objections. Use them to estimate your score before the result.

Qualifying marks are generally 40 percent aggregate across both papers for the General category and 35 percent for reserved categories. Final selection for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor is decided by the category wise cut off announced with the result, which sits well above the qualifying minimum.
