UPESSC Negative Marking: How Many Questions Should You Actually Attempt?

Published 21 October 2026 · 7 min read · By Shyam Agrawal

Quick answer. UPESSC gives +3 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one, including for marking more than one option. Three wrong answers cancel one correct answer. With 120 questions in 120 minutes, blind guessing is close to worthless, but guessing after eliminating two of the four options is clearly profitable. The practical rule is simple: attempt where you can rule out at least two options, and leave it where you cannot.

Every candidate here is NET qualified, and UGC NET has no negative marking at all. The habit of attempting everything is correct there and expensive here.

The Arithmetic That Decides Your Strategy

Everything below assumes you know 70 questions confidently and are unsure about the remaining 50. Adjust the numbers to your own position, but the shape of the answer does not change.

Case one: leave all 50 blank

70 correct, 50 unattempted.

70 × 3 = 210 marks.

Case two: blind guess on all 50

With four options and no information, you expect roughly one in four correct.

CountMarks
Correct70 + 12246
Wrong38−38
Total≈ 208

Blind guessing gained you nothing. On this arithmetic it is very slightly negative, and in practice it also costs you time you could have spent checking the 70 you do know.

Case three: eliminate two options, then guess

Once two of the four options are gone, you are choosing between two, so roughly one in two are correct.

CountMarks
Correct70 + 25285
Wrong25−25
Total260

Fifty marks better than leaving them blank.

The rule that comes out of this

Attempt where you can eliminate at least two options. Leave it where you cannot.

That single line is the whole strategy. Eliminating even one option makes a guess roughly break even. Eliminating two makes it clearly worth doing.

The break even point sits at about one third accuracy, which is exactly where eliminating a single option puts you. So one elimination is neutral, two is profitable, none is not.

Why This Is Hard for NET Qualified Candidates

You cannot sit this examination without NET, SLET, SET or a PhD. So everyone in the hall has prepared for a paper with no negative marking.

For UGC NET the correct advice is unambiguous: attempt all 150 questions, never leave a blank, because a wrong answer costs nothing and a blank earns nothing.

Months of practice built that reflex. On exam day under pressure, reflexes are what you fall back on.

Practise the new rule under timed conditions before November. Reading about it is not enough. Sit at least four full length mocks where you deliberately leave questions blank and see what it does to your score. The discomfort of leaving a blank has to be trained out.

A Time Plan for 120 Minutes

PhaseTimeWhat you do
First pass55 minMove through all 120. Answer only what you know cleanly. Mark the rest and move on.
Second pass40 minReturn to questions that need working out. Solve them properly.
Third pass20 minThe doubtful ones. Eliminate. Attempt only where two options are gone.
Final check5 minVerify the OMR sheet itself. Not the answers, the sheet.

The third pass is the one nobody plans for, because NET never needed it. It is where the elimination rule is actually applied, and it is worth more than any single unit of the syllabus.

On General Knowledge

Thirty questions carrying 90 marks, a quarter of the written paper.

Do these in the first pass. They are quick, and either you know them or you do not. Do not return to a General Knowledge question in the third pass hoping for inspiration, because there is nothing to work out. If you do not know it, elimination is your only tool, and the same two option rule applies.

The OMR Rules That Void a Sheet

These are worth more attention than they usually get, because breaking one of them costs you the whole paper rather than one question.

RuleConsequence of breaking it
Black ball point pen onlyBlue pen, gel pen, fountain pen, sketch pen and pencil are all prohibited
No whitener, eraser, blade or nailUsing any of these voids the sheet and it is not evaluated
A darkened circle cannot be changedOnce marked, it stands
Do not mark more than one circleThe question is not evaluated and you also take the negative mark
No dots, ink marks or symbols inside any circleAnything other than a full darkening can void the sheet
Fill the information boxes correctlyIf the scanner cannot read them, the sheet is not evaluated and the candidate is held responsible

Two things follow.

Decide before you darken. There is no correction. Work the question out on the rough space, settle on an answer, then mark it once and completely.

Spend the last five minutes on the sheet, not the answers. Check that your roll number and other details are darkened correctly, that no circle is half filled, and that no question has two marks. This is the most recoverable error in the whole examination and only a deliberate check catches it.

Scribe and Compensatory Time

Divyangjan candidates are permitted a scribe, with 20 minutes of extra time per hour. The scribe must be brought by the candidate.

Registration for a scribe must be completed at the commission office at least one week before the written examination, with full details, so that seating can be arranged. This cannot be organised on the day.

No travel allowance is paid to the scribe or to the candidate.

Interview: The Remaining 40 Marks

Selection is out of 400: 360 written and 40 interview.

Shortlisted candidates are informed at least ten days in advance through SMS, email, newspaper and the commission website. The interview letter is downloaded from the site.

At the interview you must bring two separate sets of self attested photocopies of every document, plus all originals in order for verification. Candidates who do not bring the originals are not interviewed.

Interview dates cannot be changed. No travel allowance is paid.

The 40 marks are not decorative. On a field of 13 posts, they will separate candidates who are within a few marks of each other on the written paper.

Tie Breaking

If totals are equal, the commission applies this order:

  1. Written examination marks
  2. Interview marks
  3. Highest percentage in the essential qualification, then PhD with JRF, then NET with PhD, then JRF, then NET, then PhD
  4. Postgraduate marks
  5. The older candidate is placed higher

Two things are worth noting. Your postgraduate percentage still matters years later, at the fourth level of the tie break. And age works in your favour here, which is consistent with the 62 year upper limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there negative marking in the UPESSC written examination?

Yes. A correct answer earns 3 marks and a wrong answer costs 1 mark. Marking more than one option also costs 1 mark.

How many questions should I attempt in UPESSC?

Attempt every question where you can eliminate at least two of the four options. Leave the rest. Blind guessing is roughly break even at best and costs you time.

How many questions are in the UPESSC written paper?

120 questions in 2 hours: 30 General Knowledge and 90 subject questions, for 360 marks.

Can I use a pencil on the UPESSC OMR sheet?

No. Only a black ball point pen. Blue pens, gel pens, fountain pens, sketch pens, pencils and whitener are all prohibited.

What happens if I mark two circles for one question?

The question is not evaluated and one mark is deducted.

Can I change an answer after darkening the circle?

No. Once a circle is darkened, no change is accepted, and using an eraser or whitener voids the sheet.

Is there an interview in UPESSC Assistant Professor selection?

Yes. The written examination carries 360 marks and the interview carries 40, for a total of 400.

Do Divyangjan candidates get extra time?

Yes, 20 minutes per hour, with a scribe brought by the candidate. Registration must be completed at the commission office at least one week before the examination.
