IIT JAM MS Plus MA: How the Two Paper Option Actually Works

Published 12 September 2026 · 6 min read · By Shyam Agrawal

Quick answer. IIT JAM 2027 is on 14 February 2027, a Sunday, in two sessions. Mathematical Statistics is in the afternoon from 2:30 to 5:30 pm and Mathematics is in the forenoon from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Because they are in different sessions, both can be written on the same day. The second paper costs a general category candidate Rs 700, not Rs 2,000. Roughly the mathematics quarter of your MS preparation transfers, and two areas do not transfer at all: Differential Equations and Group Theory.

Registration closes on 12 October 2026.

The Rule That Makes This Possible

JAM 2027 allows one or two papers, and two only if they are in different sessions.

SessionTimePapers
Forenoon9:30 am to 12:30 pmChemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA)
Afternoon2:30 pm to 5:30 pmBiotechnology (BT), Economics (EN), Mathematical Statistics (MS), Physics (PH)

MS plus MA works. MS plus EN or MS plus PH does not, because those are both afternoon papers.

The Fee Is Not What You Expect

CategoryOne paperTwo papersSecond paper costs
Female, SC, ST and PwDRs 1,000Rs 1,350Rs 350
All other candidatesRs 2,000Rs 2,700Rs 700

JAM discounts the second paper heavily. GATE does not, and charges full price twice.

Candidates who have filled both forms often assume the GATE rule applies here and rule out MA on a cost basis that is simply wrong.

Cost is not the constraint. Preparation time is.

What Actually Transfers

The MS syllabus has twelve sections. Sections 1 to 3 are Mathematics, described by the official brochure as about 25 percent of the paper, and sections 4 to 12 are Statistics, about 75 percent.

The MA syllabus has three sections. Here is how they line up.

MA SectionContainsAlready covered by MS?
1. Real AnalysisSequences and series of real numbers, functions of one real variableYes, almost entirely. MS Sections 1 and 2.
2. Multivariable Calculus and Differential EquationsFunctions of two or three variables, integral calculusYes, largely. MS Section 2.
Differential EquationsNo. Entirely new.
3. Linear Algebra and AlgebraMatrices, rank, determinant, eigenvalues, vector spacesYes, largely. MS Section 3.
Linear transformations, matrix representationPartly new
Permutations, combinations, binomial theoremPartly new
GroupsNo. Entirely new.

So the honest scope of extra work is two areas

Differential Equations. Bernoulli’s equation, exact equations and integrating factors, orthogonal trajectories, homogeneous equations, separation of variables, second order linear equations with constant coefficients, variation of parameters, and the Cauchy Euler equation.

Nothing in the MS syllabus prepares you for any of it. Budget three to four weeks.

Group Theory. Cyclic groups, abelian and non abelian groups, permutation groups, normal subgroups, quotient groups, Lagrange’s theorem for finite groups, and group homomorphisms.

This is the harder of the two, and not because it is longer. It is a structural, proof oriented kind of mathematics rather than a computational one, and Statistics students consistently underestimate it for exactly that reason.

What This Actually Buys You

Two separate All India Ranks, from one examination day.

MS opens Mathematical Statistics and Statistics postgraduate programmes. MA opens Mathematics programmes. Those are different admission lists at different departments.

But check before you assume. A second rank is worth having only if a programme you genuinely want accepts MA and not MS. Open the admission pages of the four or five programmes on your list and check which paper each one requires.

If every programme you want accepts MS, the MA rank sits unused.

The Case For

One examination day. No second application cycle, no second year of waiting.

Rs 700. Genuinely small against what a year of preparation costs.

Real overlap. The mathematics quarter of MS is roughly two of MA’s three sections.

A second admission list. Mathematics departments you cannot otherwise apply to.

The Case Against

Two new areas, not two new topics. Differential Equations and Group Theory together are perhaps six to eight weeks of work, and those weeks come out of your MS preparation.

MS is 75 percent Statistics. The part of MS that overlaps with MA is the smaller quarter. Your main paper is largely untouched by this, so the transfer benefit is smaller than the syllabus comparison first suggests.

Two ranks are better than one only if both are good. A weakened MS rank plus a mediocre MA rank is worse than a strong MS rank alone.

The Test

Three questions.

#Question
1Does a Mathematics programme I actually want accept MA and not MS?
2Can I give Differential Equations and Group Theory six to eight weeks without taking them from MS?
3Is my MS preparation already on schedule, or am I behind?

If you are behind on MS, the answer is no. Adding a second paper does not create time. It divides the time you have, and it divides it away from the paper that is 75 percent Statistics and the one you actually came for.

If You Take Both

Front load the new material. Differential Equations and Group Theory should be finished by December. They are self contained and they do not need to sit alongside your MS revision.

Study the overlap once and count it twice. Sequences, series, calculus and matrices are shared. Do not prepare them separately for each paper.

Give January and early February entirely to MS. Your primary paper should own the final stretch. The MA material, if it was learned properly in November and December, will hold.

On the day, MA comes first. Forenoon 9:30 to 12:30, then a break, then MS at 2:30. Three hours of mathematics before three hours of statistics is a long day. Practise at least two full length papers in that same pattern before February, because stamina on a six hour examination day is a real and trainable thing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take IIT JAM MS and MA together?

Yes. MS is in the afternoon session and MA is in the forenoon session on 14 February 2027, so the combination is permitted under the two paper rule.

How much does a second JAM paper cost?

Rs 700 extra for a general category candidate, taking the total from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,700. For female, SC, ST and PwD candidates it is Rs 350 extra.

How much of JAM MA overlaps with JAM MS?

Real Analysis, multivariable calculus, integral calculus and the matrix portion of linear algebra overlap substantially, which is roughly two of MA’s three sections. Differential Equations and Group Theory do not appear in the MS syllabus at all.

What extra do I need to study for JAM MA?

Differential Equations and Group Theory, plus linear transformations and basic algebra. Together that is roughly six to eight weeks of genuinely new work.

Which JAM papers cannot be taken with MS?

Economics and Physics, because both are in the afternoon session with MS. Mathematics, Chemistry and Geology are forenoon papers and can be combined.

Is Group Theory hard for a Statistics student?

It is unfamiliar rather than long. It is structural and proof oriented rather than computational, which is why Statistics students underestimate it. Start it early rather than in January.

Should I take a second JAM paper?

Only if a Mathematics programme you actually want accepts MA and not MS, and only if you can add six to eight weeks without taking them from your MS preparation.
