UPESSC Assistant Professor Statistics 2026: Complete Guide

Quick answer. The U.P. Education Services Selection Commission has advertised 13 Assistant Professor posts in Statistics, subject code 77, under Advertisement 04/2026. Applications opened on 8 September 2026 and close on 7 October 2026. The written examination is on 19 and 20 November 2026. Selection is based on a 360 mark written test of 120 objective questions in 2 hours, plus a 40 mark interview. Negative marking applies at one mark for every wrong answer. Eligibility requires a Master’s degree with 55 percent plus NET, SLET, SET or a qualifying PhD.

The commission was formerly known as UPHESC, the U.P. Higher Education Services Commission, and the official Statistics syllabus PDF still carries that older name. It is the same body and the same syllabus.

The 13 Posts, and the 2 You Might Have Missed

The vacancy table lists Statistics at serial 37 with 13 posts. All 13 are in co-educational colleges. None are in women’s colleges.

CategoryPosts
General6
SC1
ST0
OBC5
EWS1
Total13

Two of the 13 carry horizontal reservation for women. Horizontal reservation is applied across categories rather than added to them, so those two posts sit inside the numbers above rather than beside them.

Agricultural Statistics: two more posts you can apply for

Serial 42 of the same table lists Agricultural Statistics with 2 posts, both OBC.

The commission’s inter-related subject table states that for Agricultural Statistics, the following qualifications are accepted:

Agricultural Statistics, Statistics, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematical Statistics

So a candidate with a Master’s in Statistics is eligible for both. That takes your realistic pool from 13 posts to 15.

Note that the reverse is not true. For the Statistics post itself, the inter-related subject column reads “none”, meaning only a Statistics degree qualifies.

Check the eligibility and syllabus for Agricultural Statistics separately before applying, because the two posts have different syllabi even though the qualification overlaps.

Eligibility

You need both parts.

Part one: the degree

A Master’s degree in Statistics with at least 55 percent marks from an Indian university, or an equivalent grade where a point scale is used, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.

Part two: NET, SLET, SET or PhD

In addition to the Master’s, you must have one of:

  • NET conducted by UGC or CSIR
  • SLET or SET, a state level test accredited by UGC
  • A PhD awarded under UGC regulations 2009 or 2016, or later amendments

This is the single most important line in the whole notification for most readers. Every UPESSC Statistics candidate is already NET, SLET, SET or PhD qualified. If you do not hold one of these, this examination is not open to you yet, and clearing NET is the step that comes first.

The PhD exemption route, for pre 2009 registrations

Candidates registered for a PhD before 11 July 2009 are exempt from NET, SLET and SET only if all of the following are satisfied:

  • The PhD was awarded through regular mode only
  • The thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners
  • An open oral examination was conducted
  • At least two research papers were published from the PhD work, at least one in a refereed journal
  • At least two papers were presented at conferences or seminars sponsored, funded or supported by UGC, ICSSR, CSIR or a similar agency

All of this must be certified by the Registrar or the Dean of Academic Affairs of the university concerned.

The foreign university route

A PhD in the relevant subject from a foreign university or institution ranked in the world top 500 by QS, Times Higher Education, or the Academic Ranking of World Universities, at any time.

Relaxation in marks

WhoRelaxation
SC, ST, OBC non creamy layer, PwD categories5 percent, from 55 to 50 percent
PhD holders whose Master’s was completed before 19 September 19915 percent

Age Limit

The age reckoning date is 1 July 2026.

The superannuation age of the post is 62 years, and an application is not accepted if the candidate is above 62 on the reckoning date.

That is unusually generous compared with most competitive examinations, and it is worth stating plainly: there is effectively no early age barrier here. A candidate finishing a PhD at 40 is not late for this examination.

Application Fee

Payment is online only, through credit card, debit card or net banking. Keep the payment receipt.

Rules that catch people out

Category, sub category, date of birth and gender cannot be changed after final submission. No correction is permitted on these fields at any stage. Read them twice before you submit.

Only the High School certificate is accepted for date of birth. No other document will be considered.

The form must be filled in English, even though the notification itself is in Hindi.

If you submit more than one application, only the last one is accepted and all earlier ones are cancelled.

Reserved category benefits apply only to candidates who are domiciled in Uttar Pradesh. Candidates from outside the state are treated as general category.

For women candidates, the caste certificate must be issued on the father’s side. A certificate showing status through a husband is not accepted.

The EWS certificate must be for the financial year preceding the year of application.

Negative marking applies here. That matters more than it sounds, and the reason is in the next section.

The Trap for NET Qualified Candidates

Every candidate for this examination holds NET, SLET, SET or a PhD. Most of them prepared for UGC NET, and UGC NET has no negative marking at all.

Anyone who prepared for NET spent months training themselves to attempt every single question, because a blank there is a guaranteed zero and a guess is not.

That habit will cost you marks here.

UGC NETUPESSC
Correct+2+3
Wrong0−1
Questions150120
Time180 minutes120 minutes
Per question72 seconds60 seconds

Three wrong answers cancel one correct answer. On a 120 question paper with one minute per question, guessing your way through the last twenty questions can cost you more than leaving them blank.

Unlearn the NET habit deliberately. It is the single most valuable adjustment a NET qualified candidate can make for this paper.

Tie Breaking

If two candidates have the same total, the commission applies this order:

  1. Written examination marks
  2. Interview marks
  3. Highest percentage in the essential qualification, then PhD with JRF, then NET with PhD, then JRF, then NET, then PhD
  4. Postgraduate marks
  5. The older candidate is placed higher

Note the last one. Age works in your favour at the tie break, which is unusual and consistent with the 62 year limit.

Syllabus: Subject Code 77, Ten Units

UnitTitle
1Probability Theory
2Distribution Theory
3Statistical Methods
4Statistical Quality Control and Time Series
5Demography and Index Number
6Statistical Inference
7Sampling Theory
8Linear Estimation and Design of Experiments
9Multivariate Analysis
10Advance Probability Theory

Unit 10 is the one to look at first. It is measure theoretic probability: sigma fields, Borel sigma field, Lebesgue and Lebesgue Stieltjes measures, measurable functions, monotone convergence theorem, Fatou’s lemma, dominated convergence theorem, Borel Cantelli lemma, Helly Bray lemma and the inversion theorem.

None of that appears in UGC NET Statistics, GATE Statistics or IIT JAM. If you are coming from any of those, Unit 10 is new material at postgraduate level and it needs real time.

Units 4 and 5 are also absent from UGC NET. Statistical quality control with control charts and acceptance sampling, and demography with life tables and index numbers, are both examined here and not there.
