Why Paper 1 Decides Your Result
Most aspirants learn this the hard way.
Your selection is based on the combined Paper 1 and Paper 2 score. Among serious candidates, Paper 2 scores tend to cluster, because everyone studies their own subject hard. The separation usually comes from Paper 1.
A strong Paper 1 pulls a borderline candidate above the cut off. A weak Paper 1 sinks a candidate who did well in their subject. That is why your final week should include real Paper 1 practice, not only subject revision.
The Fact That Makes Paper 1 Easy to Plan
Most syllabi leave you guessing about weightage. Paper 1 does not.
The official UGC syllabus specifies that five questions carrying two marks each are set from every unit. Ten units, five questions each, gives exactly 50 questions and exactly 100 marks.
| Unit | Topic | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Teaching Aptitude | 5 | 10 |
| II | Research Aptitude | 5 | 10 |
| III | Comprehension | 5 | 10 |
| IV | Communication | 5 | 10 |
| V | Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude | 5 | 10 |
| VI | Logical Reasoning | 5 | 10 |
| VII | Data Interpretation | 5 | 10 |
| VIII | Information and Communication Technology | 5 | 10 |
| IX | People, Development and Environment | 5 | 10 |
| X | Higher Education System | 5 | 10 |
Three things follow, and they should shape your whole Paper 1 approach.
No unit can be skipped. Skipping one costs exactly 10 marks, every time. There is no unit small enough to ignore.
No unit deserves extra time over another. Teaching Aptitude feels weightier than Comprehension, but both carry 10 marks. Spending three times as long on one does not earn three times the marks.
Your weakest unit is where your marks are. Scoring 8 out of 10 in eight units and 2 out of 10 in two means fixing those two is worth more than perfecting the other eight.
Our five mock tests follow this distribution exactly, so your score on them reflects your real gaps rather than an easy paper.
How to Use These Mocks
Treat every mock like the real thing. One sitting, a timer, and no checking answers midway. In the actual exam Paper 1 shares time with Paper 2, so train yourself to clear 50 questions quickly.
Spend more time reviewing than solving. After each mock, go through every wrong answer and write one line on why you got it wrong. That single habit fixes more marks than solving ten more papers.
Attempt everything. There is no negative marking anywhere in UGC NET. A wrong answer costs nothing and a blank earns nothing, so a guess is always better than leaving it.
Watch your speed on the scoring units. Reasoning, Mathematical Aptitude and Data Interpretation are fast marks, especially if you come from a mathematics or statistics background. Being quick there frees time for the heavier units.
Where Science Candidates Usually Lose Marks
If your background is Statistics, Mathematics or any science subject, your pattern is predictable.
| Unit | How you usually do |
|---|---|
| V, Mathematical Reasoning | Easy, near full marks |
| VII, Data Interpretation | Easy, near full marks |
| III, Comprehension | Fine with practice |
| VIII, ICT | Fine, mostly memorisation |
| VI, Logical Reasoning | This is the one that catches you |
| IX, People Development and Environment | Heavy factual load |
| X, Higher Education System | Heavy factual load |
Unit VI is where science candidates lose marks, specifically the Indian Logic portion: Pramanas, Anumana, Vyapti, Hetvabhasas and the classical square of opposition. The terminology is unfamiliar and it is examined directly, not through general reasoning ability.
Give it dedicated study time. General reasoning skill will not carry you through it.
Units IX and X are factual. A compact one page list per unit, revised several times, beats reading a textbook once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these UGC NET Paper 1 mock tests free?
Yes. All five full length PDFs are free to download with solutions included. No payment, no sign up wall.
Is UGC NET Paper 1 the same for all subjects?
Yes. Paper 1 is the General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude and is identical for every candidate whatever their Paper 2 subject.
How many questions are in UGC NET Paper 1?
50 questions, each carrying 2 marks, for a total of 100 marks.
How many marks does each Paper 1 unit carry?
Exactly 10. The official syllabus specifies five questions of two marks from each of the ten units, so every unit carries identical weight.
Is there negative marking in UGC NET Paper 1?
No. There is no negative marking in either paper, so every question should be attempted.
What is a good score in UGC NET Paper 1?
A strong score is generally 70 or above out of 100. Well prepared candidates often land between 70 and 85. Below 60 puts your overall qualification at risk even with a good Paper 2.
Which Paper 1 unit is hardest for science candidates?
Unit VI, Logical Reasoning, specifically the Indian Logic portion covering Pramanas, Anumana, Vyapti and Hetvabhasas. The terminology is unfamiliar to most science and mathematics candidates and it is asked directly.
How many mock tests should I solve before the exam?
In the final week, one full length Paper 1 mock per day, reviewed properly. Five solved and reviewed carefully are enough to build real confidence.
