RBI DSIM Has Almost No Previous Year Papers. Here Is Where to Practise Instead.

Published 15 September 2026 · 7 min read · By Shyam Agrawal

Quick answer. Only a handful of memory based RBI DSIM papers exist, which is why the most searched phrase for this exam has no good answer. The fix is to borrow practice from examinations that test the same nine units: UPSC ISS Statistics for descriptive answer writing, IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics and GATE Statistics for objective practice, UGC NET Statistics for breadth, and ISI entrance or CUET PG for additional analytical work. Map each source to the units it actually covers, and the shortage stops being a problem.

Why the Shortage Exists and Why It Matters

RBI does not release DSIM question papers. What circulates is a small number of memory based reconstructions, assembled by candidates after the exam.

That is thin material to build a preparation around, and it has a second consequence people miss. The difficulty swings sharply from cycle to cycle. A candidate who calibrates against one memory based paper is calibrating against one year’s difficulty, which may bear little resemblance to the next.

So pattern hunting fails twice over: too little data, and unstable data.

What Works Instead

The nine DSIM units are not exotic. Every one of them is tested somewhere, by an examination that does publish its papers.

Here is the mapping, unit by unit.

DSIM UnitBest practice source
1. Probability, Distributions, SamplingIIT JAM MS, GATE ST, UGC NET Statistics
2. Linear Models and Economic StatisticsUGC NET Statistics, UPSC ISS
3. Statistical InferenceGATE ST, UPSC ISS, IIT JAM MS
4. Stochastic ProcessesGATE ST, UGC NET Statistics
5. Multivariate AnalysisUGC NET Statistics, UPSC ISS
6. Econometrics and Time SeriesUGC NET Statistics, and economics papers
7. Optimization and Statistical ComputingThin everywhere. ISI entrance, university papers
8. Data Science and Machine LearningNothing. Use textbook exercises.
9. Database and Data WarehouseNothing. Use SQL practice platforms.

Six of the nine units have good external practice available. Two have none. One is thin.

Knowing which is which is the whole point of this page. Do not waste months hunting for DSIM machine learning questions that do not exist. Do spend those months on ISS papers for units 1 to 6, where the material is abundant and free.

Source by Source

UPSC ISS Statistics: the closest cousin

This is the single most valuable source and the one most DSIM candidates overlook.

UPSC ISS has four Statistics papers, two objective and two descriptive, with papers available from 2014 onwards. The descriptive papers ask long form questions on probability, inference, sampling, design of experiments, multivariate analysis and econometrics.

DSIM Paper II is descriptive Statistics written by hand for 180 minutes. ISS descriptive papers are the nearest available rehearsal that exists anywhere.

How to use it. Write the answers by hand, to time, on paper. Do not solve them mentally or type them. The skill you are building is producing a structured statistical argument with a pen under time pressure, and that skill only develops by doing exactly that.

UPSC ISS previous year papers

GATE Statistics: objective rigour

Eight papers since 2019. Heavy on probability, distributions, estimation, testing, stochastic processes and multivariate analysis, at a demanding level.

How to use it. For Paper I practice. GATE ST questions are conceptually sharp and often require you to see through a framing rather than compute, which is exactly the skill an unpredictable objective paper demands.

GATE Statistics previous year papers

IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics: clean fundamentals

Objective and numerical practice on probability, distributions, limit theorems, sampling distributions, estimation and testing.

How to use it. Early in your preparation, to confirm your foundations are solid before moving into the harder units. If you cannot clear JAM MS questions comfortably, DSIM Paper I will be difficult.

IIT JAM MS previous year papers

UGC NET Statistics: the breadth match

UGC NET Statistics has ten units and covers sampling methods, design of experiments, econometrics, time series and multivariate analysis.

This is your best external source for Unit 6. Econometrics and time series are examined in UGC NET and in almost nothing else at this level.

How to use it. Specifically for units 2, 5 and 6. Its econometrics coverage, including multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation, Durbin Watson and simultaneous equations, maps directly onto DSIM Unit 6.

UGC NET Statistics section

ISI entrance and CUET PG Statistics

Additional analytical practice, particularly for probability and inference. ISI questions in particular reward conceptual depth over computation.

How to use it. As supplementary material once the four sources above are exhausted, not as a starting point.

The Two Units Nobody Can Help You With

Unit 8, Data Science and Machine Learning. No Indian Statistics examination tests it. Your practice source is the exercises in An Introduction to Statistical Learning, which is free to download from its authors, plus conceptual reading for the deep learning topics.

Unit 9, Database and Data Warehouse Management. No examination tests it either. Your practice source is writing actual SQL queries on a free practice platform. Inner, left, right and outer joins are learned in an hour of doing and never learned by reading.

This is where the shortage is real. Accept it, allocate the time, and use textbook exercises rather than searching for question papers that were never written.

A Practice Schedule That Works

StageWhat you practiseSource
FoundationObjective, units 1 to 3IIT JAM MS, then GATE ST
DepthObjective, units 4 to 6GATE ST, UGC NET Statistics
New unitsTextbook exercises, units 7 to 9ISL exercises, SQL platform
DescriptiveLong form written answers by handUPSC ISS descriptive papers
Final phaseFull length timed objective setsMixed sources
ThroughoutPaper III English: precis, essay, comprehension, typedAny competitive English source

The descriptive row is the one candidates skip, because writing a twenty mark answer by hand is slow and uncomfortable compared with solving objective questions. It is also the row that decides Paper II, which is a third of your written marks.

Concepts Are the New Previous Year Questions

A question on the Cramer Rao inequality, ridge regression or a Markov chain can be framed in a dozen different ways. The underlying concept does not move.

A candidate who has solved forty framings of the same idea across five different examinations is better prepared than one who has memorised two memory based DSIM papers.

That is not a consolation for the missing papers. It is a better preparation method, and the shortage is what forces you into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are RBI DSIM previous year papers available?

Only a limited number of memory based papers exist. RBI does not release official DSIM question papers, so building a preparation around pattern analysis is not practical.

Where can I practise for RBI DSIM instead?

UPSC ISS Statistics papers for descriptive practice, GATE Statistics and IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics for objective practice, and UGC NET Statistics for econometrics, time series and breadth.

Which exam is closest to RBI DSIM Paper II?

UPSC ISS descriptive Statistics papers. Both ask long form statistical answers written by hand under time pressure, on overlapping topics.

How do I practise the data science and database units?

No Indian Statistics examination tests them. Use the exercises in An Introduction to Statistical Learning for Unit 8, and write actual SQL queries on a free practice platform for Unit 9.

Is UGC NET Statistics useful for RBI DSIM?

Yes, particularly for Unit 6. UGC NET Statistics covers econometrics and time series in depth, and very few other examinations at this level do.

Does the lack of previous papers make RBI DSIM harder?

It makes pattern based preparation impossible, which changes the method rather than the difficulty. A concept first approach with practice borrowed from other examinations works better than pattern hunting would have.
