Quick answer. With Statistics (ST) as your primary paper, GATE 2027 permits a second paper from CS, DA, MA or XH. The fee is charged per paper at full price, so two papers cost a general category candidate Rs 4,000 rather than Rs 2,000. Of the four options, DA has the most syllabus overlap with ST and XH has almost none. For most candidates the honest answer is one paper, and the exception is narrow.
Registration closes on 27 September 2026. Sixteen days.
What the Rules Allow
GATE 2027 lets a candidate appear for one or two papers, subject to the permitted combinations. With ST as your primary paper:
| Code | Paper |
|---|---|
| CS | Computer Science and Information Technology |
| DA | Data Science and Artificial Intelligence |
| MA | Mathematics |
| XH | Humanities and Social Sciences |

The Cost, and Why It Matters More Here Than in JAM
| Category | One paper | Two papers |
|---|---|---|
| Female, SC, ST and PwD | Rs 1,000 | Rs 2,000 |
| All other candidates | Rs 2,000 | Rs 4,000 |
GATE charges full price twice. There is no discount for a second paper.
This is worth stating because IIT JAM does the opposite. There, a general category candidate pays Rs 2,000 for one paper and Rs 2,700 for two, so the second paper costs Rs 700.
A candidate who has done both applications may assume GATE works the same way. It does not.
The Real Question Is Not Cost
Rs 2,000 is not what should decide this. Five months is.
The GATE 2027 examination runs from 6 to 21 February 2027. From today that is about five months. Preparing two papers in five months is possible only if you already have a substantial base in the second subject.
Preparing two papers badly gets you two mediocre scores. A single strong ST score opens more doors than two indifferent ones, because admission committees look at your rank in the paper relevant to their programme, not at how many papers you sat.
How Much Actually Overlaps
This is the part nobody works out properly, so here it is, subject by subject.
ST + DA: the strongest pairing
The GATE DA syllabus has seven sections: Probability and Statistics, Linear Algebra, Calculus and Optimization, Programming with Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Management and Warehousing, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence.
| DA section | Covered by your ST preparation? |
|---|---|
| Probability and Statistics | Yes, substantially |
| Linear Algebra | Yes, ST Matrix Theory covers most of it including SVD |
| Calculus and Optimization | Partly. ST Calculus covers the calculus, not the optimization. |
| Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms | No |
| Database Management and Warehousing | No |
| Machine Learning | No |
| Artificial Intelligence | No |
Roughly the mathematical third of DA comes free with your ST preparation. The remaining two thirds is programming, databases, machine learning and AI, none of which is in the ST syllabus.
One detail in your favour. Singular Value Decomposition is explicitly in the GATE ST Matrix Theory syllabus and it is a named DA topic too. That is unusual and it means your linear algebra transfers more completely than you might expect.
Who this suits. Someone who already writes Python and has studied machine learning, formally or otherwise. If you have never written a program, DA is not a second paper, it is a second subject.
ST + MA: more overlap than you think, and more work than you think
GATE Mathematics covers real analysis, complex analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, algebra, functional analysis, topology, numerical analysis and linear programming, alongside calculus and linear algebra.
| Area | Covered by your ST preparation? |
|---|---|
| Calculus | Yes |
| Linear Algebra | Yes, through ST Matrix Theory |
| Real Analysis | Partly, and MA goes considerably deeper |
| Probability and Statistics | ST goes far deeper. Limited MA return. |
| Complex Analysis | No |
| Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations | No |
| Abstract Algebra | No |
| Topology and Functional Analysis | No |
| Numerical Analysis | No |
| Linear Programming | No |
The overlap sits in two areas and the gap sits in seven.
Statistics students often assume MA is close to ST because both are mathematical. Complex analysis, topology, functional analysis and abstract algebra are genuinely different subjects, and MA tests them at a level that assumes a mathematics degree.
Who this suits. Someone with a Mathematics undergraduate degree who moved to Statistics later. If your degree was Statistics, treat MA as a new subject.
ST + CS: almost nothing transfers
GATE Computer Science covers digital logic, computer organisation and architecture, programming and data structures, algorithms, theory of computation, compiler design, operating systems, databases and computer networks, plus an engineering mathematics section.
Only the engineering mathematics section overlaps, and that is the smallest part of the paper.
Who this suits. Someone with a Computer Science background who took Statistics as a postgraduate subject. For a Statistics graduate with no CS background, this is not a second paper in five months.
ST + XH: no overlap at all
XH is Humanities and Social Sciences. It has a compulsory Reasoning and Comprehension section plus one optional subject from Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology or Sociology.
Nothing in your ST preparation helps here, with the partial exception of Economics if you have studied it.
Who this suits. Someone with a humanities background targeting a humanities programme who happens also to hold a Statistics qualification. That is a narrow group.
The Honest Ranking
| Combination | Overlap | Verdict for a typical ST candidate |
|---|---|---|
| ST + DA | Highest | The only one worth considering, and only if you already code |
| ST + MA | Moderate but misleading | Only if your background is Mathematics |
| ST + CS | Very low | Only with a CS background |
| ST + XH | None | Only in unusual circumstances |
Before You Decide, Check the Programmes
This is the step candidates skip, and it decides everything.
A second GATE score is worth having only if it opens a programme you actually want.
Before paying Rs 2,000, do this:
- List the four or five programmes you genuinely want to apply to
- Open each one’s admission page
- Check which GATE paper codes they accept
- Check whether any of them accept DA, MA, CS or XH but not ST
If every programme on your list accepts ST, a second paper buys you nothing. You will apply with your ST score regardless, and the second score sits unused.
If a programme you want accepts DA but not ST, that is a real reason, and the only one on this page that is.
The Test
Three questions. All three must be yes.
| # | Question |
|---|---|
| 1 | Does a programme I actually want accept the second paper and not ST? |
| 2 | Do I already have a working base in that subject, not just interest in it? |
| 3 | Can I add it without reducing the time my ST preparation currently gets? |
Question 3 is the one that fails most often. Adding a second paper does not add hours to your day. It divides the hours you already have.
If the honest answer to any of the three is no, apply for ST alone. That is not a compromise. It is the choice that gives you the best single rank, which is what admission actually uses.
If You Do Take Two
Do not split your time evenly. ST is your primary paper and it should keep the large majority of your hours.
Study the overlapping material once and count it for both. For ST plus DA, that means probability, statistics, linear algebra and calculus are shared, and the DA specific work is programming, databases, machine learning and AI.
Front load the second paper. Get the non overlapping DA material done by December, then return to ST for the final stretch. A second paper prepared in January costs you your primary paper in the month it matters most.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which papers can I take with GATE Statistics?
With ST as the primary paper, GATE 2027 permits CS, DA, MA or XH as the second paper, subject to the official two paper combination list.
How much does a second GATE paper cost?
Full price again. A general category candidate pays Rs 2,000 per paper, so two papers cost Rs 4,000. Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates pay Rs 1,000 per paper.
Which second paper has the most overlap with GATE ST?
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Its Probability and Statistics, Linear Algebra and Calculus sections overlap substantially with the ST syllabus, roughly the mathematical third of the DA paper.
Is GATE MA easy for a Statistics student?
Less than it looks. Calculus and linear algebra overlap, but complex analysis, differential equations, abstract algebra, topology, functional analysis and numerical analysis do not appear in the ST syllabus at all.
Should I take a second GATE paper?
Only if a programme you actually want accepts that paper and not ST, you already have a working base in the subject, and you can add it without reducing your ST preparation time. If any of those is no, apply for ST alone.
Does taking two papers improve my admission chances?
Only if the second paper opens a programme that ST does not. Institutes assess your rank in the paper relevant to their programme, not the number of papers you attempted.
When does GATE 2027 registration close?
27 September 2026 without a late fee, with an extended window to 5 October 2026 at an additional Rs 500 per paper.
