The Session Schedule Decides Your Options
JAM 2027 runs both sessions on the same day. Which session your paper falls in determines whether you can take a second paper at all.
| Session | Time | Papers |
|---|---|---|
| Forenoon | 9:30 am to 12:30 pm | Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA) |
| Afternoon | 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm | Biotechnology (BT), Economics (EN), Mathematical Statistics (MS), Physics (PH) |
A candidate may take one or two papers, and two papers only if they are in different sessions.
| Combination | Possible? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| MS + MA | Yes | MS afternoon, MA forenoon |
| MS + CY | Yes | Different sessions |
| MS + GG | Yes | Different sessions |
| MS + EN | No | Both afternoon |
| MS + PH | No | Both afternoon |
| MA + CY | No | Both forenoon |
The Second Paper Is Cheaper Than You Think
This is where JAM differs sharply from GATE, and most candidates do not notice.
| Category | One paper | Two papers |
|---|---|---|
| Female, SC, ST and PwD | Rs 1,000 | Rs 1,350 |
| All other candidates | Rs 2,000 | Rs 2,700 |
For a general category candidate, the second paper costs Rs 700, not another Rs 2,000. GATE charges full price twice. JAM does not.
The fee is non refundable under any circumstances.
So cost is not the constraint on taking MS plus MA. Preparation time is. The Mathematics portion of the MS syllabus overlaps meaningfully with MA, but MA additionally requires Differential Equations and Group Theory, neither of which appears anywhere in the MS syllabus. That is real extra work, not a weekend of revision.
Decide honestly. Two ranks are better than one only if both are good.

Registration, Step by Step
Registration happens through JOAPS, the JAM Online Application Processing System, on the official JAM website.
- Register on JOAPS with your name, a valid email address, an active mobile number and a password
- Note the Enrollment ID and OTP sent to your email and mobile
- Log in using the Enrollment ID
- Fill in personal details: name, date of birth, gender, category, contact details, address
- Enter your academic details for the qualifying degree
- Select your test paper, and a second paper if you want one in a different session
- Select your examination city preferences
- Upload photograph, signature and any applicable certificates
- Review every field
- Pay the fee online
- Submit and save the confirmation
Documents to Keep Ready
Gather these before you open the form.
- Recent photograph in the specified format
- Signature in the specified format
- Class 10 certificate or marksheet showing date of birth
- Qualifying degree information
- Category certificate, if applicable, issued on or after 1 April 2026
- Documents relating to disability, if applicable
- Valid photo identity information
- An online payment method
Note the date condition on the category certificate. An older certificate may not be accepted.
Getting the photograph and signature specification right on the first attempt saves the most time. Read the exact requirements in the official brochure before you scan anything.
Eligibility
There is no age restriction for JAM 2027.
You are eligible if you have either:
- Completed your undergraduate degree, or
- Will appear in the final examination of your qualifying degree in 2027
There is no minimum percentage requirement to appear for the examination.
Appearing Is Not the Same as Being Admitted
Qualifying JAM gives you a rank. Admission needs three things together:
JAM qualification + Programme Eligibility Requirements + Minimum Educational Qualifications
The Eligibility Requirements and Minimum Educational Qualifications are set by each admitting institute for each programme, and they differ. A candidate with a strong MS rank may still be ineligible for a specific M.Sc. programme if their undergraduate subject combination does not meet that programme’s stated conditions.
Two conditions apply in every case. The undergraduate programme must be completed before the admission date of the admitting institute, and proof of passing must be submitted within the timeline that institute sets.
Build your target list now, not in March. Pick the programmes you want, read their Eligibility Requirements in the official brochure, then set a target rank. A rank without an eligible programme behind it is worth nothing.
The Correction Window Costs Money
An additional fee of Rs 300 applies to change your category, gender, examination city or date of birth after submission. The same Rs 300 applies to adding or changing a test paper.
Correction is available through the JAM portal within an announced window, so check the official site for the current deadline.
The cleanest approach is simply to get it right the first time. Read every field twice before you submit.
Common Mistakes
1. Choosing a second paper in the same session. MS and EN are both afternoon. MS and PH are both afternoon. The portal may let you select them and the problem appears later.
2. Selecting a second paper without checking programme eligibility. A second rank is only useful if it leads to programmes you can actually apply to.
3. Assuming the two paper fee is double. It is not, and some candidates rule out MA on a cost assumption that is wrong.
4. Category certificate dated before 1 April 2026. Check yours now.
5. Waiting for the last week. The portal is slowest between 8 and 12 October.
Compensatory Time and Scribes
Candidates with disabilities are eligible for one hour of compensatory time per paper, making the end time 1:30 pm for the forenoon session and 6:30 pm for the afternoon session.
The relevant forms must be completed during registration. This cannot be arranged later, so do it now if it applies to you.
After You Apply
Three things matter more than anything else from here.
- Download the official syllabus for your paper. The MS syllabus has 12 sections, split as roughly 25 percent Mathematics and 75 percent Statistics.
JAM MS syllabus, all 12 sections - Understand the paper structure. JAM has 60 questions worth 100 marks across three sections. Section A is 30 MCQs with negative marking. Section B is 10 MSQs with no negative marking and no partial marking. Section C is 20 NAT questions with no negative marking, entered on a virtual keypad with the computer keyboard disabled.
Sections A, B and C explained - Start previous year questions early, topic by topic, not saved for January.
